Chapter Thirteen

KAT

It’s a perfect day. It’s been gloomier than usual lately, with no sun in sight. But on this rare, sunny day, I dragged Sean with me to the park. It’s packed with families and small children, no doubt needing to get out and enjoy the day.

And what an enjoyable day it is. Sean’s head is resting in my lap while I read. I can’t remember the last time I’ve read for fun. Usually after a long day of scheduled events, I’m too tired to do anything but fall into bed. But sitting here in the park with Sean, it couldn’t get any better than this.

It’s the kind of perfect day that might not be in my future. It’s getting closer and closer to when my holiday is supposed to end. An ache I’ve never known settles over me every time I think about leaving this place. About leaving Sean. I can’t imagine going back to the palace and having every minute of my life scheduled. Having every move, every look picked apart. It’s panic-inducing.

“Where’d you go, love?” Sean’s voice brings me back to the present. My fingers have been stroking his hair, loving the silky feel.

“Just thinking about you.” It isn’t an outright lie, but I don’t really want to get into the truth now. How does one go about telling someone they are falling for that they aren’t who they say they are?

“Hopefully good things,” he says, leaning up and capturing my lips with his. The taste of the beer he had with lunch lingers on his lips.

“Like how I have my very own James Bond and all the wicked things I want to do to him.”

“Oh, I do like these things. I don’t know why we’re lazing around here when we could be going at it in bed.” His eyes are telling. He’s ready to bolt and make good on his word. And while it wouldn’t be the worst way to spend the afternoon, I shove him right back down.

“Cool it, Bond. We’re taking advantage of this day. I could use some sunshine.” Usually getting sunshine means tucking myself away in a corner of my garden where I can’t be seen. But being out here in the park where no one knows who I am is the most incredible feeling in the world. “I want to get back to reading, so you hush.”

“And what are you reading, love?” His eyes are closed again as my hand drifts under the V of his T-shirt. I’ve memorized the patterns of ink that mark his skin.

“A romance book.” It was too tempting to pass up at the corner market when I was getting my escape items. I never get to read for pleasure, and the half-naked man on the front was very enticing.

“And what kind of romance book?” His hand comes down on top of mine, stilling my motion. The beat of his heart under my palm keeps me settled.

“Historical. A lady is betrothed to a duke whom she does not love.
